The Gospel according to Matthew was once the Church’s favourite account of the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. In it Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfilment of all the promises God had made concerning the kingdom of heaven. Jesus does not merely preach the gospel of the kingdom, but he himself actually embodies it, and so brings the life and the liberty of the kingdom to men and women held captive by sin. And all the while the shadow of the Cross lies over his path: he is called Jesus because “he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
This is the gospel that has been taken out to all the nations of the earth: the gospel that has revolutionized the history of the world.
