Sermons

Preaching is a living activity. The delivery of the Word is meant to be deeply informed by the relationship between pastor and people. There can be no substitute for being present in your own assembly when the Word is preached by your own minister. We strongly encourage you to listen regularly and receptively to the Word preached by your own teaching elder.

With that in mind, we offer the following sermons. If you find them helpful we would be more than happy to hear from you and to get to know you.

The Selfless Obedience of Christ (Philippians 2:7-8)

Psalms for singing:
Psalm 8A stanzas 1-7
Psalm 18 stanzas 27-30

1. Christ emptied himself and took the form of a servant in order to be obedient
2. Christ humbled himself and became like other men in order to be obedient
3. Christ went to Calvary and died upon the Cross because this fulfilled his obedience

Let's remember that in this Paul is setting Christ before us as an example of the selflessness which characterises conduct worthy of the gospel of Christ.

John Calvin comments: “Christ’s humility consisted in his abasing himself from the highest pinnacle of glory to the lowest ignominy: our humility consists in refraining from exalting ourselves by a false estimation. He gave up his right: all that is required of us is, that we do not assume to ourselves more than we ought. Hence [Paul] sets out with this--that, inasmuch as [Christ] was in the form of God, he reckoned it not an unlawful thing for him to shew himself in that form; yet he emptied himself. Since, then, the Son of God descended from so great a height, how unreasonable that we, who are nothing, should be lifted up with pride!”
